Opening week was nothing if not a success. Despite some intermittent storms anglers brought home 14 permit and plenty of the rest. This is always a fun week, with our annual “Palapalooza’ trip hosted by Bucking Rainbow out of Steamboat Springs staying at Playa Blanca. This group fishes hard. Lots of fishing off the beach at night, with jacks, barracuda, bonefish, grouper, permit, and more. We had a giant barracuda launch a high end rod thirty feet into the ocean, both fish and rod were eventually reclaimed by swimming and hand lining. Veteran Casa Blanca angler Joe Dudra managed three permit for the week, bringing his tally to 149….150 was on the line but managed to get away. Tarpon fishing in Santa Rosa and the Tarpon lagoon has been hit or miss, there were exceptional days and slow days both.
