Casa and Playa Blanca Lodges Fishing Report February 24-March 03 2018

The end of February was what one might refer to as the Scorpion week. Anglers of both Casa and Playa Blanca are required to consume a Scorpion alongside a shot of fine tequila when releasing a Permit on Fly for the first time. Some hosts such as Rich Panni from Trouthunter in Island Park, ID broaden the rules and instruct their anglers to participate in the time honored tradition when they (the fisherman) release their first Permit on our Island. Guide Pat Gaffney from Victor, ID, Todd, Tony, Nate, Ryan and Chad all consumed Scorpions last week and lead the way for a group
that had one thing in mind, Permit. The week began with promising winds for both lodges and immediately provided a reprieve from the 2018 blustery conditions. The entire gang picked off Permit throughout the week and Father and Son team Chuck and Doug added some great Snook fishing as well. Nate ended the week with a beautiful fish with guide Pato. The Trouthunter team knocked off a bunch of first Permits and were all smiles boarding the plane on Saturday.

Casa Blanca open the doors to Reds Fly Shop from Ellensburg, Wa. The fisherman from the Northwest were made up by Steve Joyce, Adam, Steve, Mike, Blaise and Mark from Washington and Morgan, Chris and Matt from Cortalane, Idaho. The fisherman started the week putting a bend in the rod with big bonefish and began to increase Permit shots by Tuesday. Steve Joyce started the party off with a Permit release and Mike and Blaise followed him up as the week progressed. Joyce and Matt also added a few nice Tarpon. Joining the Reds gang was the Sandbo trio, Father and 2 sons. Steve Sr. Came to the Yucatan via Ohio and sons Steve and Drew flew in from L.A. Steve Jr. released his first Permit and downed a Scorpion as fluid as I have witnessed on Punta Pajaros. His brother joined in on the action a day later with a Scorpion of his own. Dad stayed happy releasing a boatload of Bones. Thanks to the whole crew last week and job well done with the rods and the tequila, scorpion shooters!
