We had a great group of friends during the week of October 19- October 26. Most of the group resides in either Virginia Beach, VA or Vail, CO. They arrived on October 19th to sunny and mostly calm conditions on the island. There were a couple of big bonefish caught on day one while most folks were lounging around the lodge having cocktails.

The first day with guides was overall good condition in Ascension Bay for finding the elusive permit. We had light winds, sunshine, and hot weather. There were a total of 5 permit, 2 tarpon, and a handful of bone fish caught this day. Luckily, the permit were wanting to eat this day.

After this first day, we had a few days of relatively tough conditions in Ascension Bay.The wind was very strong and cloud cover made the fishing difficult. Fortunately, a couple of snook, tarpon, and bonefish were caught during this period but the permit didn’t want to cooperate. The evenings were spent having cocktails, enjoying the lodge, and catching jacks, barracudas, and tarpon in the surf right in front of the lodge using surf fishing gear!

Conditions on the island and  in the bay, mostly cloud cover, improved over the rest of the week. Clouds make seeing the fish, especially permit, quite difficult. Thankfully, on the final couple of days, we had less and less clouds. Most of the group targeted permit on the final day and lucked out on a couple of nice permit in Ascension Bay.  The folks who decided to spend the final day targeting bonefish had a blast and had shots most of the day. They landed a couple of very nice bonefish back in the Santa Rosa Lagoon system.
